When a local resident of Mystic Grove is found murdered, a Door County lawyer hires private investigators, Liz Bean and Sam Nolan, to find the killer. He wants justice, which will hopefully clear his son, who is one of the main suspects. He also has another motive that he conceals from Liz and Sam.

When Liz dives into the case, she finds that the victim had a tragic past. He also had secrets that brought him into contact with any number of people who might have killed him.
