Holy Cow! What did Mark Write?
C Tom
An unknown Greek author wrote a short 16-page-long mega tragedy, two millennia ago. The story was based on true events that happened several decades earlier in a far away land occupied by Rome. The events were already well known among some communities in Greece. So, the written record of the events became popular in Greece and later in Eastern Roman Empire. Nothing is known about the author except that he was Greek. Later, the author came to be known by the randomly chosen name, 'Mark'. As time went by, his short story came to be known as the true record of the events that happened decades earlier. The literary quality of the writing is not at par with other great Greek works. The reason for the popularity of this tragedy is its unique story line and the message of hope delivered in heart wrenching manner. The story line is very unique. All the elements of a classic Greek tragedy are present: phenomenal rags-to-fame rise of a reformist Hero, the message of hope for the poor and humble masses, supernatural god-like magic and miracles, murderous conspiracy by wicked leaders of his society, betrayal by trusted companion, trumped up charges, false witnesses, show trial and unjust death sentence under political pressure, a humiliating excruciating painful death and miraculous escape from grave. This action filled 16 pages-long-story will keep the reader on the edge of his seat until the end and leave an undelible message of hope in his heart. What exactly did he write to make it more memorable than Homer's Iliad? The original manuscript has been copied and the copy has been copied and eventually many copies have been made. Errors were made during copying. Words and sentences have been added and deleted and modified by copiers. The original manuscript and early copies have been lost. The earliest surviving manuscript was made two hundred years after the original was scratched on parchment sheets. These copies have been translated into several languages. "Holy Cow! What did Mark Write?" is a faithful approximation to the surviving copies of the original and their various translations in plain English. Commentaries have been added to expound and enhance the story.
