It's the time of the annual Swiss Festival in Sweet River, Ohio. Jed, Sara, and Ellie are watching the parade. Suddenly, Jed hears a pop, and the councilman riding in the open convertible leans sideways and topples out of the car into the middle of the road. Jed rushes up to him and feels for a pulse. There is none. The dead man, Clyde Roswell, a former banker, was accused of embezzling $350,000 from the only bank in Centersburg, PA. Though he was never found guilty, many suspect he is. However, his brother Daniel pays the bank back, thinking he'll receive half of a million dollar inheritance from his terminally-ill father, and that Clyde will gradually repay the money. Instead, Dan does not receive his half of the inheritance and believes his brother is responsible. As a result, Dan loses his consulting business. Shortly after this, Clyde and his family moved to Sweet River where he bought the hardware store. Who murdered Clyde? Was it someone from the bank back in Pennsylvania? Was it a man who accused Clyde of stealing the money from his savings account? Was it his wife's lover or the wife herself? Or maybe it was the old owner of the hardware store who is in dire financial straits because Clyde hasn't kept up on payments?
