Saracinesca

Although now better known for his ghost and horror stories, 'Saracinesca' was F. Marion Crawford's most successful novel in his own lifetime, and still has a wealth of pleasurable detail to offer the contemporary reader. Set in Rome in the 1860s, it combines aristocratic love affairs with acute psychological observations about the European political situation of the time, peppered with a good dash of swordplay and duelling.
