THE CALABASH TREE by GANDOLPH ST. CLAIR, a St. Lucian Graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, is a literary miscellany of two, one act performed plays, ONE LOVE and GUESS WHO CAME TO VISIT THE DOCTOR; one short story, THE PATENT MAN; poems including the long title poem THE CALABASH TREE. ONE LOVE won the Howick Ellcock Memorial Playwrighting Award in 1977 in St. Lucia and reflects on the family and social conflicts caused by the emergence of Rasta in the Caribbean while GUESS WHO CAME TO VISIT THE DOCTOR is a satirical examination of the values and attitudes in our society's sexual revolution. THE PATENT MAN is a parable on the potential and purpose of our existence. THE CALABASH TREE is an autobiographical poem about the first seventeen years of the writer's life while the other poems vary in style and form ranging from the lyrical, surreal to dub/ performance poetry. THE CALABASH TREE contains photography by the author. Other publications by GANDOLPH ST. CLAIR are THE THIRD UMPIRE, an ICC, commissioned short play on cricket and JUST IN CASE containing two performed plays, the musical THE HUSTLERS and JUST IN CASE, 2nd place in the 1982 BBC Caribbean Commonwealth Radio play competition.
