Some Came Morning

After waking up mid-day, alone in a motel bed at the Key Lime Village, Henry realizes dreaming about last night in Key West wasn't a nightmare. He did get through a tawdry day in old town with Corky and Cat and he did survive a night of debauchery on board the cruise ship, Pleasure Odyssey. If Henry thought his idyllic life working on his second novel was interrupted two days ago when they showed up at his house demanding he take them to Key West to meet Jake for the first time, this morning he's thinking twice. Corky is lying cold and dead in a morgue. Where Cat is he doesn't know and Henry's girlfriend, Finee, thinks she's pregnant. Where does he start? In Henry's eye's it all starts with Jake. The patriarch of the family. Jake better be on Bull's shrimp trawler docked at Stock Island sleeping off last night. They need to decide what to do about Corky. Put their heads together and figure out what comes next. Henry has questions that need answers. Who's responsible for Corky's death? Oyster Boy? Jake? Why didn't his mother tell them Corky was Jake's son? Henry wanted a second novel to write; now he's got one dropped in his lap. And how did Finee get pregnant when she was on the pill? More questions. So he needs to find Jake. He needs to share the tragic news with his mother of her youngest son's death. He needs to get his ass home to Matecumbe, explain to Finee, what the hell happened and learn if she's pregnant. Then start his next novel. And somewhere in Henry's mind, a voice is gnawing at his conscious whispering he needs a beer. The conundrum of the morning is which comes first and which comes after.
